Islamic Republic of Iran
The Islamic Republic of Iran set up a National Consultative
Committee on Space Science and Technology Applications Affairs,
headed by the Minister of Post, Telegraph and Telephone
and with the President of the Iranian Remote Sensing Centre
(IRSC) serving as the secretary.
Remote sensing and GIS are being used in a variety of applications
in agriculture, water resource management, geological mapping,
mineral exploration, range land management, cartography,
land-use planning and desertification, among others. Meteorological
satellite data are also being extensively used for weather
forecasting, natural hazard monitoring, sea surface temperature
studies and other related applications. The country had
established in a ground station for receiving satellite
remote sensing data at Mahdash.
The country has a fairly extensive telecommunications infrastructure
and network, which is being further extended to increase,
inter alia, the number of available international channels
by a factor of almost three and expand VSAT operations.
As part of the country's long-term telecommunications development
programme, the government is planning a national satellite
communications system based on three identical satellites,
named Zohreh. |
