INDONESIA
The national space coordination
agency is the National Council for Aeronautics and Space
of the Republic of Indonesia (DEPANRI), with the President
of the Republic of Indonesia and the Minister of State for
Research and Technology being its Chairman and Vice-Chairman,
respectively. The National Institute of Aeronautics and
Space (LAPAN) is the principal national R and D organization
responsible for the implementation of the aerospace programme
in the country.
Indonesia was the first developing country to have its
own operational domestic satellite communication system
when its first Palapa communication satellite was launched
in 1976. The Palapa-C and Cakrawarta-1 satellites will be
followed by the Garuda series, Telkom and Cakrawarta-2 satellites.
Indonesia operates a ground receiving station for the acquisition
and processing of data from various remote sensing satellites,
such as Landsat, SPOT, ERS-1 and JERS-1. Indonesia is also
engaged in the development of its own aeronautical navigation
satellite surveillance system for the twenty-first century.
Some large-scale projects implemented by Indonesia include
the Land Resource Evaluation Programme, Marine Resource
Evaluation Programme, Environmental Management Development
in Indonesia, Coastal Environment Management Project, Coastal
Zone Resource and Management Project, Application of Radar
Data in Indonesia, Satellite Application Technology Transfer
in Indonesia and National Forest Inventory. |
