| Background and Objectives:
ESCAP recognized the unique potential of space-based
technologies for sustainable development within the region,
and established a three-tier network mechanism of RESAP,
which include four Regional Working Groups to promote substantive
regional cooperation on major space application fields such
as: Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems and Satellite-based
positioning; Meteorological Satellite Applications and Natural
Hazards Monitoring; Space Science and Technology Applications;
and Satellite Communication Applications.
Upon the recommendations of the Intergovernmental Consultative
Committee on RESAP at its ninth session in Kuala Lumpur
in December 2004 to focus the subsequent meetings of the
regional working groups on a common theme in line with the
essential themes to be addressed by RESAP, the Tenth Meeting
of the Regional Working Group on Remote Sensing, Geographic
Information System and Satellite-based Positioning and the
Ninth Meeting of the Regional Working Group on Meteorological
Satellite Applications and Natural Hazards Monitoring will
be organized in conjunction to address a common priority
theme of RESAP, i.e. disaster reduction. The meetings of
the Regional Working Groups, hosted by the Indian Space
Research Organization, will immediately precede the Tenth
Session of Intergovernmental Consultative Committee on RESAP
at Bangalore, India.
Please note:
The meetings of the Regional Working Groups are open to
invitees only. The Regional Working Groups comprise National
Contact Points nominated by ESCAP members and associate
members through their RESAP National Focal Points.
