for 11th Session(#10)
Background and Objectives:
ESCAP initiated the Regional Space Applications Programme
for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific (RESAP)
in 1994 to promote regional cooperation and facilitate equitable
sharing of the benefits of space technology applications
by countries in the region. The Intergovernmental Consultative
Committee (ICC), as the guiding body of the three-tier network
mechanism of RESAP, provide ESCAP with policies and technical
advices for the most effective use of space technology and
applications for achieving sustainable development of the
region.
Mr. Kim Hak-Su, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations
and Executive Secretary of UNESCAP, will attend the ICC
session and invites Heads of Space Agencies and National
Focal Points on RESAP to a round table discussion on regional
issues and common priority areas to which space technology
could help addressing, and the expected role of space agencies
and ESCAP in future years.
The ICC will also review the progress of RESAP since its
inception, discuss its evolving role within the framework
of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the World Summit
on the Information Society (WSIS) and the World Summit on
Sustainable Development (WSSD), and discuss regional issues
and priority areas of common concern to be addressed by
space agencies and UNESCAP in preparation of the Third Ministerial
Conference on Space Applications for Sustainable Development
in Asia and the Pacific, which the sixtieth session of ESCAP,
held in Shanghai on 22-28 April 2004, agreed to organize
in 2007.
Please note:
The ICC meeting is open to invitees
only. National Focal Points are designated by Governments
for participation in the ICC sessions. Members of RESAP
participate in their national delegations.
