WIPO/ESCAP Regional Forum "Towards Sustainable Development: Partnerships for Innovation and Technological Capacity Building in the Least Developed Countries of Asia and the Pacific Region"
The Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA), adopted during the Fourth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (UN LDC IV), held in Istanbul in 2011, highlighted the need for greater cooperation at national, regional and international levels to afford LDCs with enhanced capacity in science, technology and innovation to achieve sustainable development .
A Regional Forum for Least Developed Countries (LDCs) of Asia and the Pacific region, jointly organized by WIPO and UN ESCAP, will bring together representatives from government, business and industry, academia, and research and development institutions to discuss the design of an appropriate framework for partnerships involving the LDCs of the region which would contribute to the development of their capacity in the area of science, innovation and technology and its applications for national sustainable development.
The objectives of the forum are:
a) Identify innovation and technology capacity issues of the LDCs of the region and formulate recommendations on how capacity building and development of innovation systems at various levels can be used to address their national sustainable development challenges.
b) Identify issues and ideas towards the development of a proposed framework for a multi-year LDC-UNESCAP- WIPO partnership programme on innovation and technology capacity building towards sustainable development in the LDCs of the Asia and the Pacific region.
