Third Meeting of the Steering Group for the Regional Programme on Economic Statistics
The Third Meeting of the Steering Group for the Regional Programme on Economic Statistics took place on 29-31 October 2013 at the UN Conference Centre in Bangkok. The newly reconstituted Steering Group of over 20 countries and three development partners came together in Bangkok with a view to moving from planning stage to operations at the regional and national levels. The Group is chaired by Mr Jeff Cope (New Zealand) with Mr Satyabrata Chakrabarti (India) and Ms Badamsetseg Batjargal (Mongolia) as co-chairs. Representatives of the Asian Development Bank, Japan, the Russian Federation, Samoa and Singapore are the other members of a Coordination Committee that oversees the day-to-day activities under the Regional Programme.
The objectives of the meeting were threefold:
(i) To ensure that all Steering Group members are familiar with the main elements of the Regional Programme, the Core Set of Economic Statistics, the implementation plan and the Terms of Reference of the Steering Group;
(ii) To have a comprehensive overview of the capacity gaps and capacity building initiatives on economic statistics in Asia and the Pacific;
(iii) To agree on the next steps of Regional Programme implementation, the work programme, modalities and the division of labour for the Steering Group.
The Steering Group members reviewed the implementation plan of the Regional Programme endorsed in the last session of the ESCAP Committee on Statistics, the results of the region-wide Capacity Screening conducted by ESCAP in 2013, the ongoing economic statistics capacity building initiatives in the region and at the global level in order to make recommendations on a more specific work programme. As a result of the meeting, the implementation plan was confirmed and a draft work programme with a clear division of labour was proposed for 2014-2015.
