Side event at the UN General Assembly: Regional Perspectives on the Global Compact on Migration

ESCAP, on behalf of the UN Regional Commissions, and in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh organised a side event at the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly on “Regional Perspectives on the Global Compact on Migration”. The side event was held on 22 September 2017 in CR9 at the UN headquarters from 13:00-14:30 hours. The side event followed a roundtable discussion format comprising of the following speakers, who shared their perspectives on the Global Compact:

  • H.E. Mr Enele Sopoaga, Prime Minister of Tuvalu and chair of 73rd ESCAP Session
  • H.E. Mr Hugo Martinez, Minister of Foreign Affairs, El Salvador
  • H.E. Mr Lucky Mulusa, MP, Minister of National Development Planning, Zambia
  • H.E. Mr Jürg Lauber, Permanent Representative of Switzerland and co-facilitator of Global Compact
  • H.E. Mr Md. Shahidul Haque, Foreign Secretary, Bangladesh
  • Ms. Louise Arbour, Special Representatives of the Secretary-General on International Migration
  • Ms. Alicia Barcena, Executive Secretary of ECLAC
  • Dr. Shamshad Akhtar, Executive Secretary of ESCAP
  • Mr. Mohammed Ali Alhakim, Executive Secretary of ESCWA
  • Ms. Olga Algayerova, Executive Secretary of ECE
  • Professor David Malone, Rector of UNU and Chair of the Global Migration Group
