Seminar on Capacity-building for the Development and Operation of Dry Ports of International Importance
Phase II (2012-2016) of the Regional Action Programme (RAP) for Transport Development in Asia and the Pacific adopted by the Ministerial Conference on Transport held in Bangkok in March 2012, mandates the ESCAP secretariat to promote regional and interregional connectivity and cooperation through the further development of the Asian Highway and Trans-Asian Railway networks as well as dry ports. The activities under the RAP aims at bringing about the realization of an international integrated intermodal transport and logistics system for the region.
ESCAP together with its member countries and development partners recognizes the role of intermodal interfaces, including Dry Ports, in integrating the Asian Highway and Trans-Asian Railway networks into a comprehensive transport system that provides efficient access to goods and services in support of economic and social development while, at the same time, minimizing the negative impacts of a rapidly growing transport sector.
With the above in mind, ESCAP, in collaboration with the International Union of Railways, is organizing the above-captioned seminar at the United Nations Conference Centre, Bangkok, on 18 and 19 March 2014. The seminar, which follows the signing of the Intergovernmental Agreement on Dry Ports during the Forum of Asian Ministers of Transport at its second session (Bangkok, November 2013), is intended as a networking event between government officials and experts from international institutions involved in the planning, design, development and operation of Dry Ports.
