17 March 2015 | By invitation only

The second meeting of the Expert Group on Disaster-related Statistics in Asia and the Pacific is organized by ESCAP and Tohoku University, with the support of UNDP, on 17 March 2015 in Sendai, Japan as a side event of the Third United Nations World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction.

The Expert Group is comprised of experts from Governments, regional and international organizations as well as research institutes in the field of statistics and disaster risk reduction. Constituted following ESCAP resolution 70/2, the Expert Group first met in October 2014 to discuss and work on the development of a basic range of disaster-related statistics in Asia and the Pacific. The second meeting of the Expert Group is expected to ascertain the alignment of the basic range of disaster statistics with the ongoing negotiation on the post 2015 Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Sustainable Development Goals and targets; achieve consensus on a core component of disaster statistics including the definition of disaster occurrence, types and classifications of disasters and the immediate impacts; and develop a plan for producing a compilation guide for the disaster statistics.
