Regional Seminar on Safe, Climate Adaptive and Disaster Resilient Transport for Sustainable Development and Ninth Regional Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) Forum in Asia

UN ESCAP and the United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD), Japan are collaborating to organize the Regional Seminar on Safe, Climate Adaptive and Disaster Resilient Transport for Sustainable Development and the Intergovernmental Ninth Regional Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) Forum in Asia from 17 to 20 November 2015 in Kathmandu, Nepal. The theme of the 9th EST Forum is- EST for Resiliency- Building Safe, Smart, Low-carbon and Resilient Cities in Asia.

While countries in the ESCAP region continue to face challenges in meeting the rising demand for safe, climate adaptive and resilient transport systems and infrastructure, many of them are yet to make these issues major part of their transport policy. With this background, this regional seminar and Forum aims to provide opportunities to: (i) share and exchange ideas, issues and experiences in building safe, climate adaptive and disaster resilient transport; (ii) discuss policies, strategies and action plans for development of safe, climate adaptive and disaster resilient transport systems; and (iii) showcase various regional and global initiatives and policy options to improve road safety. More than 500 senior transport policy makers in member States and representatives of cities, experts and representatives of international organizations are expected to participate in the seminar and Forum.

The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Nepal is the local host and co-organizer along with the the Ministry of the Environment, Japan. The Forum is expected to be opened by the Prime Minister of Nepal and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minster of Physical Infrastructure and Transport will chair a plenary and adoption of the Chair's summary.
