About the Conference

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra of Thailand and ESCAP Executive Secretary Noeleen Heyzer during the 68th Session of the Commission

The upcoming Ministerial Conference on Regional Economic Cooperation and Integration in Asia and the Pacific is organized as per Commission resolution 68/10, “Enhancing regional economic integration in Asia and the Pacific”. During this four-day event, heads of governments, ministers, senior policy makers, experts and other stakeholders will discuss a broad scope of issues related to economic cooperation and integration in the region, covering topics of trading arrangements, connectivity, regional financial cooperation, and cooperation to address shared vulnerabilities and risks.

The Commission, at its 68th session in May 2012, emphasized that the Asia and the Pacific region’s dynamism, which is crucial for the elimination of poverty and for the inclusive and sustainable development of the region, will critically depend on its ability to harness the potential of regional economic cooperation and integration. The Commission therefore decided to convene the Ministerial Conference with a view to further reviewing the Commission theme study, entitled Growing Together: Economic Integration for an Inclusive and Sustainable Asia-Pacific Century, which presents a comprehensive view of regional economic cooperation and integration based on four pillars: (i) markets integration, (ii) seamless connectivity, (iii) financial cooperation, and (iv) addressing shared vulnerabilities and risks.

In preparation for the Ministerial Conference, two consultation meetings are organized for preliminary discussions on the related issues. Through this process the preliminary text of the draft Bangkok Declaration on Regional Economic Cooperation and Integration in Asia and the Pacific is prepared, which will be submitted to the Ministerial Conference for further consideration.
