Theme of side event
Improving support for statistical development in Asia and the Pacific through strengthening coordination and cooperation among international, regional and sub-regional statistical development partners and, bilateral donors.

Background
Many international, regional and sub-regional organizations and bilateral donors have long been active in supporting statistical capacity building in countries of the Asian and Pacific region. A recent PARIS21 survey of the on-going activities of these statistical development partners revealed significant overlap of activities by diverse organizations in certain areas, and the potential for stronger
coordination and collaboration to achieve synergy and improve overall effectiveness.

All evidence points to the need for improving coordination and cooperation among key partners, starting with regular sharing of information on on-going and planned activities, identification of opportunities for cooperation, discussion of issues that require collective attention and action, and exploration of the possibility of developing common work programmes in the long term.

The inaugural session of the ESCAP Committee of Statistics provides an excellent opportunity for major statistical development partners to discuss and jointly define the contours of a strategy to move forward on strengthening such coordination and cooperation.
