First Meeting of the Regional Steering Group for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) in Asia and the Pacific
From 9 to 11 December, the Regional Steering Group for CRVS in Asia and the Pacific held its inaugural meeting following its establishment pursuant to ESCAP resolution 69/15.
H.E. Dr. Neil Sharma (Minister of Health, Fiji) was elected as Chair of the Regional Steering Group, and Dr. Enrique Tayag (Assistant Secretary of Health, Philippines), Dr. Chandrasekaran Chandramouli (Registrar-General and Census Commissioner, India) and Mr. Peter Harper (Deputy Australian Statistician, Australia) were elected Vice Chairs.
At the meeting, which included a number of observers from the Regional CRVS Expert Network, participants discussed the development of an action framework for accountability and monitoring of the Regional Strategic Plan for the Improvement of CRVS in Asia and the Pacific and preparations for the ministerial conference on CRVS in November 2014. The outcome of the meeting was a communiqué with five recommendations to achieve a vision of universal and well-functioning CRVS systems in all Asian and Pacific countries, including for 2015-2024 to be a CRVS decade and for there to be a target of universal CRVS in the post-2015 development agenda.
