The 73rd Commission session in May 2017 adopted the Resolution 73/8 Strengthening regional cooperation for sustainable energy development in Asia and the Pacific. By this Resolution, member States endorsed the report of the Committee on Energy on its first session and decided to fully prepare for the second Asian and Pacific Energy Forum (APEF) in 2018. In addition, member States decided to convene a preparatory meeting for the second Asian and Pacific Energy Forum and mandated the secretariat to conduct analytical studies and compile and disseminate relevant energy information and data, utilizing a combination of existing funds and extrabudgetary contributions. The Commission also decided to create two expert working groups on energy connectivity and on universal access to modern energy services, renewable energy, energy efficiency and cleaner use of fossil fuels.

Against this background, the secretariat is organizing the first meeting of the two expert working groups:
1) Expert working group on universal access to modern energy services, renewable energy, energy efficiency and cleaner use of fossil fuels;
2) Expert working group on energy connectivity.

These meetings will be organized on 13-14 December 2017 in Bangkok prior to the Regional Preparatory Meeting for the second Asian and Pacific Energy Forum on 15 December 2017. Participation in both Expert Working Group meetings is by invitation only.
