Expert Group Meeting on Regional Integration and the Role of APTA

19 Nov 2013
Bangkok, Thailand

Trade agreements promote economic development by lowering barriers and encouraging an expansion in trade. The Asia-Pacific Trade Agreement (APTA) is the oldest preferential trade agreement among developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region. It furthers international economic cooperation through the adoption of mutually beneficial trade liberalization measures. This Expert Group Meeting (EGM) aims to review the perspectives on current regional integration trend, including regional perspectives on deeper regional integration and to re-examine the practical vision and the potential of the Asia-Pacific Trade Agreement as a regional mechanism for regional economic integration. The EGM will also review two major commissioned studies on facilitating integration of Central Asia and the Pacific Subregions of ESCAP through APTA.
