Expert Consultation on the Asian Information Superhighway and Regional Connectivity

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies (MoCIT) of the Government of Azerbaijan, are co-organizing an Expert Consultation on the Asian Information Superhighway and Regional Connectivity.

The purpose of the consultation is threefold: a) identify choke points and dark spots in sub-regional, regional and international connectivity, assess related investment opportunities, including for cross-sector infrastructure development, and financing options; b) review the regional map that ESCAP and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) have jointly developed on the fiber-optic backbone networks, and propose activities for further development of the map; c) agree on a roadmap for the Asian information superhighway initiative, including terms of reference for a working group that will be tasked with drafting an intergovernmental cooperation arrangement, as contained in ESCAP Resolution 69/10.

Participants of the Consultation will consist of representatives from ICT ministries and agencies, telecom regulators, and the private sector. International organizations such as the Asian Development Bank (ADB), International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and the World Bank will also be represented in the Consultation, as well as regional and international ICT experts.
