Civil Society Consultation on Beijing+20 Review
The 20-year review of progress in implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action (Beijing+20) takes place at a strategic moment: the global community is intensifying efforts towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and shaping a post-2015 development agenda. These concurrent processes provide a critical opportunity to position gender equality and women’s empowerment at the centre of the global agenda in a synergistic, interdependent and coherent manner.
To support these mutually-reinforcing processes, ESCAP and the UN Women Regional Office for Asia jointly organized an Asia-Pacific Civil Society Consultation for the 20-Year Review of Implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action and for the 58th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women in Bangkok, 10-11 February 2014.
Objectives of the Meeting:
- To undertake consultations with civil society on the proposed regional Beijing+20 review process, including the convening of the Asian and Pacific Conference on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment: Beijing+20 Review (10-14 November 2014, Bangkok); and
- To provide a platform for civil society to review achievements, remaining obstacles and ways forward with respect to the implementation of the MDGs for women and girls in Asia and the Pacific and provide inputs to the regional intergovernmental Asia-Pacific Preparatory Meeting for the 58th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (12 – 13 February 2014, Bangkok).
