Asia-Pacific Regional Preparatory Meeting for the 57th session of the Commission on the Status of Women
The Asia-Pacific Regional Preparatory Meeting for the 57th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) will be held from 5 to 6 February 2013 at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok. The objective of the Meeting is to provide a forum for the 12 member States of the Asia-Pacific region that are members of the 57th session of Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) to identify common concerns and ways forward in accelerating the progress on the elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls, which is the priority theme of the 57th session of CSW.
Violence against women and girls is one of the most pervasive human rights violations in the world. In Asia and the Pacific, violence affects women and girls in every country, regardless of culture and context, with serious health, economic and social consequences for themselves, their families and societies. The Regional Preparatory Meeting will bring together senior-level representatives directly involved in the formulation and implementation of national policies on gender equality and empowerment of women, from the following 12 governments in Asia-Pacific: Bangladesh, China, Georgia, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation and Thailand.
The Regional Preparatory Meeting is being jointly organized by ESCAP and UN Women, as co-chairs of the Regional Coordination Mechanism Thematic Working Group on Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women.
