The Asia-Pacific Intergovernmental Meeting on the Second Review and Appraisal of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing was held from 10 to 12 September 2012, at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok. The Meeting was held in pursuance of Commission resolution 67/5 on the full and effective implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing in the Asia-Pacific region.

A decade after the adoption of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA), the Meeting served as a key regional platform for reviewing the achievements in the implementation of the Madrid Plan of Action and the remaining challenges in preparation for and adapting to an ageing future.

The Meeting adopted the Bangkok Statement on the Asia-Pacific Review of the Implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, which represented the Asia-Pacific input to the global review and appraisal of the MIPAA, held in 2013 under the auspices of the Commission for Social Development.

The objectives of the Meeting were:

  1. To review the progress made in the Asia-Pacific region in the implementation of the Madrid Plan of Action;
  2. To consider key priorities under each priority direction in the Madrid Plan of Action for the next implementation cycle from 2013 to 2017 in the Asia-Pacific region;
  3. To identify key areas for regional cooperation to further strengthen the implementation of the Madrid Plan of Action.

30 delegations comprising Governments of ESCAP members and associate members were represented at the Meeting, in addition to non-governmental organizations and representatives from the United Nations bodies, specialized agencies and related organizations.
