(d) Nutrition, Treatment
of Malnutrition and Rural Nutrition Project
It is
intended through education to inform the public of the importance of sound
nutrition. During the Plan period 47 units will be set up to deal with
malnutrition diseases, an attempt will be made to control goitre in the areas
where it is prevalent and research work will be undertaken to find ways to
remedy such problems as Vitamin A deficiencies, berri-berri and anemia.
As
regards nutrition in rural areas, the programme will be expanded to cover all
71 provinces 75 nutrition centres for pre-school children will be established
each year, reaching a total of 275, in an attempt to solve the nutrition
problems of that age group which are regarded as of high priority. Moreover,
it is hoped that these centres will help people to understand the value of
sound nutrition and encourage them to cooperate in the organization of such
centres for school age children. Experiments in cheap and nutritious lunch
programmes at the primary school level will be carried out in cooperation
which the Ministry of Education and Provincial Administrative Authorities. The
objective of this experiment is to come up with information and guidelines
useful to the institutions concerned with the carrying out of such programmes.
It is intended to carry out one such test programme in one province each in
the South, Northeast, and Central Regions.
(e) Provision of Potable
Water in Rural Areas throughout the Country (Rural Water Supply System)
To
date 269 rural water supply systems in 53 provinces (1961-1970) have been
constructed, and approximately 750,000 persons have benefited from this
service.
To
help solve the problem of insufficient water (in particular potable water) in
households in rural areas, various water supply system will be constructed
during the plan period throughout the country. Approximately 80 to 100 water
supply systems will be set up annually, reaching each year not less than
200,000 persons or about 200 villages. The criteria for the construction of
such water supply systems will be as follows: the village has a population of
not less than 500; a natural source of water is available but is too distant
from the community; the population wants the water distribution system and the
community is prepared to cooperate by providing material and labour as far as
their resources allow.
(f) Rural Health
Development: Programmes initiated during the Second Plan period
will be continued. The objective is to reduce both the number of people
suffering from gastro-intestinal and parasitic diseases and the number of
deaths due to these diseases. With the participation of the public it is
intended to provide sanitation services to people in rural areas and to
increase their standard of living and welfare. During the Third Plan period
more health promotion programmes will be carried out, covering eventually a
total of 12,900 villages, with a combined population of 6.45 million. Each
year, 103,240 sanitary toilet facilities will be installed. Programmes aimed
at the elimination of intestinal parasitic diseases will be carried out in 300
village and 1,500 small scale water supply systems will be installed.
