Background
As a component of the ESCAP-UNFPA project entitled
“Population, Development and Poverty: Emerging
Challenges” implemented during the 2004-2007
cycle, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission
of Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the United Nations
Population Fund (UNFPA) will organize a training
workshop on population, development and poverty
in the Pacific in Suva from 24-28 September 2007.
The training workshop will help national planners
and policy makers to better understand the complex
relationships between population, development and
poverty.
The training workshop will involve approximately
14 participants from Pacific Island countries who
are mid-level officials employed in the national
planning office or national statistical office and
involved in issues of population and development.
It is envisaged that the national and sectoral planning
offices are able to integrate population issues
into development planning in ways that reduce poverty,
promote gender equality and empower women towards
the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals.
The training workshop will employ the computer program
SPECTRUM, which permits analysts to prepare population
projections and sectoral projections on the economy,
health and education.
