The
goal of the Health and Development Section (HDS) is to promote
health for all as a critical condition for economic growth and social stability. It is premised on good health as a priority development goal and a basic right of all in the development process.
Health is well-being and the highest possible level of freedom from disease achieved through joint responsibiilty -- by individuals, households, communities, the public and private sectors, civil society groups, and the international community.
HDS focuses on addressing the development determinants of health towards healthier Asian and Pacific socities that are more resilient to disease, more vibrant, more productive, and enjoy increased life expectancy and higher lifetime earnings.
Priority areas:
- Strengthening health systems/promoting investment in health
- Globalization and health, in particular the implications of trade on health
- Achieving the health-related Millennium Development Goals, in particular preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases
Key interventions include:
- Normative work and policy analysis for increased investments in health systems and health sector financing.
- Analysis of regional health trends and their development determinants.
- Curriculum development and training of health
and social service providers.
- Exchange of good practices in health and development.
The above work is undertaken in consultation with other
United Nations bodies and specialized agencies to ensure
a coherent UN-system response to health and development
issues in Asia-Pacific.
The "Regional Framework for Strategic Action: Promoting Health and Sustainable Development" lays the foundation for our future work.
