The Health and Development Section (HDS) promotes health for all as a critical condition for economic growth and social stability. Good health is premised as a priority development goal and a basic right of all in the development process.
Good health for all is dependent on the quality, equity and efficiency of health systems. In this context, HDS focuses on policies to strengthen all aspects of health systems. This includes strengthening human resources for health, health financing, delivery of health services, access to affordable and quality essential drugs, health promotion and universal coverage of healthcare.
Health is also significantly influenced by social determinants, including gender equity, education, poverty, individual lifestyles, environment, culture and the structure of society at large. These determinants are social conditions that affect health but can be modified through informed action. They require the attentive study and consideration of geography, ethnicity, race and generational groups. Additionally, the increasing impact of trade and economic factors needs to be addressed through holistic policies which protect public health, while optimizing the economic gains. |
