EXPERT GROUP MEETING ON THE PROMOTION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF CEDAW, TRAFFICKING IN WOMEN AND VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
Bangkok, 3-5 October 2005

The Expert Group Meeting on the “Promotion and Implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) with Particular Emphasis on Violence against Women and Trafficking in Women” will be held at the UN Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand from 3-5 October. Experts from nine countries with expertise in such fields as trafficking, international law, and violence against women, as well as representatives of NGOs, UN agencies, and Government officials, are expected to attend.

The outcome of the meeting will serve as an input to UNESCAP’s work with Member States on violence against women, trafficking in women and women’s rights, and will also serve as input to the UN Secretary-General’s study on violence against women. The results of the meeting will also be transmitted to the CEDAW Committee for its consideration and possible future action.

The specific objectives of the meeting are:
*To identify the core obligations of CEDAW States parties in relation to trafficking using an approach which explores the connections between violence against women, discrimination and trafficking;
To examine the issue of state responsibility with regard to these identified obligations of States parties;
*To explore links between obligations of States in relation to CEDAW and those derived from other international legal instruments relevant to trafficking;
*To identify effective practices in relation to implementation of States obligations in this area;
*To provide an outline of issues for consideration by CEDAW in relation to eventual development of a General Recommendation on Article 6
*To provide inputs into the strategic framework for gender and human rights that will guide the work of the ESCAP Gender Programme especially in relation to trafficking in women.
