The Gender and Development Section of ESCAP is organizing the Regional Seminar on "Strengthening the capacity of national machineries for gender equality to shape migration policies and protect migrant women", which will take place in Bangkok, Thailand from 22-24 November 2006. The Seminar will serve as a follow-up to the High-Level Dialogue of the United Nations General Assembly that took place in New York from 14 to 15 September 2006 and as a means to explore ways in which national machineries and mechanisms for the advancement of women and gender equality can better influence migration-related policy and law making and address concerns of migrant women.
Topic for discussion at the Seminar include:
- social and economic impact of migration;
- the impact on children left behind as well as those accompanying a parent;
- brides as migrants;
- The impact of conflict-related migration on national development in post-conflict peace building and its gender dimensions;
- displacement due to disasters, environmental degradation and development projects;
- women migrants and health;
- protecting the rights of women migrants;
- strategies and good practices for adressing migration-related issues at national, regional and international levels.
Participants in the Seminar will include academic experts and representatives of national machineries for gender equality, international organizations and non-governmental organizations
