Energy Management in Sugar Manufacturing Industries in the Islamic Republic of Iran

At the request of the Ministry of Energy and Energy Efficiency (SABA), the Islamic Republic of Iran, an ESCAP study team, together with SABA, in February 2002 conducted a preliminary energy audit and a training course on energy efficiency at a sugar factory in Mashad City, North-Eastern Iran.

The objectives of the training course were to train the participants in identifying potential for energy savings, and to promote and increase awareness on rational use of energy in the sugar manufacturing industry, including potential for productivity improvements. The energy audit was conducted as part of the training course. 31 participants, representing 18 sugar factories, took part in the training.

The training course touched on the following issues:

  • Principles of energy management

  • Energy audit procedures

  • Energy management procedures

  • Energy balance calculation

  • Quality control procedures

  • Energy saving procedures

Based on the energy audit, the advisory team together with the trainees made observations and recommendations on the following topics:

  • Potentials for Electricity Reduction

  • Potentials for Steam Reduction

  • Maintenance

In order to realize the potential for energy savings and cost reductions, the ESCAP team recommended to set company specific targets for the reduction of energy consumption and to designate energy managers at the factory level.
