Advisory Mission on Geothermal Energy

A Group Training/Study Tour of geothermal energy experts from the Russian Far East was conducted during the middle of March 2001, in Kyushu, Japan, with the assistance of the Energy Conservation Center, Japan.

The objective of the event was to facilitate the exchange of experiences between experts from Japan and the Russian Far East on the effective use of geothermal sources of energy. The Russian experts met with their counterparts in Japan to discuss and study Japanese experiences in harnessing geothermal energy in a commercially feasible and environmentally sound manner.

Japan holds a number of geothermal plants. The visiting experts from Russia visited two geothermal plants, Hachobaru and Takigami of Kyushu Electric Power Company, and one turbine manufacturer, Nagasaki Shipyard, Mitsubishi Heavy Industry.
The following topics were discussed:
  • Silica scaling problems in production wells and re-injection wells.
  • Chemical and mechanical measures to reduce silica scaling.
  • Advanced turbine design and construction.
  • Transfer of two-phase flow.
The meetings and discussions were held to give the Russian experts an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the characteristics of Japanese geothermal power supply and in a later stage apply their experience in the development of Russian geothermal power plants.
