Introduction

In 2007, UNESCAP will publish Electricity and Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific with the aim of tailoring information to be more useful to policy-makers and stakeholders.

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission of Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) have been publishing the biennial Electric Power in Asia and the Pacific since 1951 as a tool for disseminating data and information pertaining to the electric power sector. The name of the publication has changed a number of times to reflect developments in the publication over the years.

One of the major changes will be the inclusion of a broader range of information related to the power sector and its role in sustainable development. Traditionally, information for this sector has focused on the economic dimension of sustainable development. UNESCAP aims to build on this by incorporating the social and environmental dimensions in a more balanced manner.

The ESCAP secretariat would like to extend its deepest gratitude for the cooperation and assistance of the organizations and authorities, which have contributed to the issuance of previous versions of Electric Power in Asia and the Pacific and have assisted us in developing the new Electricity and Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific. We would sincerely appreciate your continued cooperation.
