Lighting up lives (1.33 Mb)

The energy component of the project aims at mobilizing private sector involvement through public-private partnership in providing sustainable electricity supply to the poor. UNESCAP is working in partnership with the Government of Indonesia, NGOs, a local community and private investors to build a demonstration project, which is a mini-hydro power plant in a community in Indonesia.

Another component of the project is devoted to build human and institutional capacities for facilitating private sector's access to financial resources in developing partnership projects. Under this component, study exchange visits will be organized to identify potentials for replication of institutional mechanisms of other countries.

A delegation from Indonesia, comprising nine senior government officials and representatives from power utilities and NGOs, viewed a project in Sagar Island, West Bengal, which has been implemented at grass-roots level. This was part of the delegation's visit to India from November 9 to 16, 2003.
