The United
Nations’ designated International World Water Day is
held annually on 22 March, to commemorate the importance
of water and emphasize the conservation and management
of water resources. It is an
initiative borne out of the United Nations Conference on
Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de
Janeiro in 1992.
The theme for the World Water Day 2001 is
"Water and Health" and for the first time, the
World Health Organization is the lead agency for the
day.
The Water and
Mineral Resources Section, Environment and Natural
Resources Development Division, of the United Nations
Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific
(ESCAP), is organizing a special event to commemorate
the Day, with the support/participation of WHO.
Aim
Our main aim
through this effort is to increase public awareness on
the impacts of water on health in the region and provide
a platform to various agencies and NGOs that have some
important work to their credit on the theme.
Programme
The
first session is a panel discussion on the "Perspectives
of Water and Health: the Vision into Action".
The second
session includes a discussion on "Water and
Health: Prevention is Better than Cure" and the afternoon session is devoted to
"NGO and Volunteer: Initiatives on Water
Conservation" and is aimed at
evoking a sense of participation among young Thai
students in water conservation and management
initiatives.
An exhibition is also being organized
for the event on the theme with
contributions from various UN agencies, NGOs,
international organizations and government
ministries.
WMRS
Initiatives

context of water and health, the Water and Mineral
Resources Section is highlighting two aspects of water
