Malaysia: National Preparations for the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development

In preparation for the 1992 Rio Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), in addition to the parallel negotiations on climate change and biological diversity, the Government of Malaysia established the National Steering Committee for Environment and Development (NSCED). Chaired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the NSCED met on numerous occasions to forge a national position that would reflect the interests of the concerned line ministries, including, but not limited to, the Ministries of Science, Technology and Environment, International Trade and Industry, Primary Industries, and Education. The NSCED also organized a series of public consultations in view of including the interests of industries and NGOs in the national position.
