Malaysia: Conservation and Environmental Management Division
The Conservation and Environmental Management Division (CEMD) of MOSTE formulates and coordinates environmental policies, strategies and action plans. The Division also oversees the operations and activities of the Departments of Environment and Wildlife and National Parks, as well as the Malaysian Meteorological Service. The CEMD is the focal point for the Conventions on biological diversity (CBD), climate (FCCC and Kyoto Protocol), hazardous wastes (Basel), ozone (Vienna and Montreal), wetlands (Ramsar), dumping wastes at sea (London), and endangered species (CITES).
Although the CEMD experienced human resource shortages in the 1990s, the number of professional staff has increased considerably in 2001 as the result of a technical assistance capacity development project financed by Danish Cooperation for Environment and Development (DANCED).
