Constitution of People's Republic of China

Principles of government policies

- In Chapter I, Article 9 of the Constitution provides that the State ensure the rational use of natural resources and protect rare animals and plants. The appropriation or damage of natural resources by any organization or individual by whatever means is prohibited.

1. This Article is linked with Article 26. Whereas the provision of this Article directed more to the utilization of components of the environment, e.g., natural resources, Article 26 is more of a clause for conservation of the environment and its constituents. Article 9 implies the prohibition of deforestation, while Article 26 encourages afforestation. These two Articles of the Chinese Constitution form the principle of sustainable use of natural resources and conservation of environment.

- Article 26 of Chapter I of the Chinese Constitution stipulates that the State protects and improves the living environment and the ecological environment and prevents and remedies pollution and other public hazards. Furthermore, the State shall organize and encourage afforestation and the protection of forests.
