D. Developing sustainable development indicators

Practical uses of Indicators

Practically, Indicators can provide following valuable inputs;

Guidance for decision makers in formulating development policy, plan, strategy and programs

  • Basics for comparing environmental quality of a given project with that of internationally accepted environmental standard, guidance values.
  • Alarm decision makers for appropriate activities so as to prevent imminent environmental hazards form any project.
  • Monitor progress of program and plans to achieve target/ goal of sustainable development.

Assessment of progress toward sustainable development by using sustainable development indicators will require the followings;

  • Assessment of criteria of development indicators
  • Selection and prioritization of relevant set of database matching national environmental visions
  • Modality of interpretation, ranking of indicator/ combination of indicators
  • Comparison of indicator values to targets, reference values, ranges , threshold limits of internationally accepted environmental standard such as drinking water quality of the World health organization.
