D. Developing sustainable development indicators

Modality of environmental assessment

The modality of Environmental Assessment, which directly relates with parameters of sustainable development, varies from country to country depending upon socio-politico-economic and technological development status of given country. Ecological and economic issues are interacting and interdependent. Both are linked to socio-cultural-political factors. The common features of Environmental Assessment undertaking include: Screening, Scoping, Environmental Assessment and Monitoring/ Auditing.

In each step of Environmental Assessment project cycle, public participation is involved so as to ensure sustainability of a project/program/plan thereby involving people from planning, implementation to monitoring phases.

Generally Environmental Assessment has been applied at 4 level: Project level, Regional level, Sectoral level and Strategic policy, planning level. The evolution of project level Environmental Assessment to Regional Environmental Assessment (REA) and Strategic environmental Assessment (SEA) heralds greater public acceptance and significant role of EA in sustainable environmental management.
