Myanmar: ASEAN membership
Myanmar is now admitted to the ASEAN as a member state and will participate in the AFTA and accede to other agreements for ASEAN economic cooperation. Myanmar will also have to adopt the ASEAN Strategic Plan for Action on the Environment (1994-1998) by which Myanmar will have to:
- support the development of a regional framework integrating environment and economy;
- promote government-private sector interactions;
- strengthen institutional and legal capacities to implement international agreements on environment;
- Strengthen the coordinating mechanism for the implementation and management of regional environmental programs and so on. As a party of ASEAN, Myanmar will also be a party to the ASEAN Co-operation Project on Environment. All of these will affect the national policy formulation in all sectors, including the mining sector.
