Examples of the roles that environment ministries are expected to play in policy making
Nepal: Ministry of Population and Environment created in 1995
- Responsibilities
- Coordinating: Coordination with other ministries for implementation of international agreements
- National focal point on population and environment for all international donors
- Policy making: Formulation of environmental plans and programmes
- Implementation: implementation of environment related international agreements
- Monitoring: Monitoring compliance of regulations. Formulation and implementation of EIA guidelines
- Administration: Serve as a secretariat to higher body: Environment Protection Council
- Awareness: environmental education, awareness campaign etc. training for implementation of programmes on population and environment
- Information: environmental database, preparation of state of environment report
- Weakness: small organizational strength, lack of trained manpower and financial resources
