B. Training programmes with a bearing on the tea sector

4. Specialized training programmes

Specialized training is made available for strengthening the capabilities of CEA staff as well as the personnel of other State agencies that provide support services for environmentally related project activities. The training includes:

  • A Harvard training programme on environmental policy and social planning for capacity-building among policy makers. The beneficiary of the programme is the Department of National Planning;
  • A three-month training programme in the United States on ambient air quality monitoring. Sponsored by USAID and the World Bank, the training is beneficial to work that is related to climate change issues;
  • Training in industrial waste minimization techniques and cleaner production under United Nations Industrial Development Organization/UNDP sponsorship;
  • Training related to air and water pollution at the Neeri Research Centre in India, under the auspices of the Indo-Lanka Economic Commission;
  • Environmentally-related training arranged through the Ministry of Industrial Development with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency/Asian Productivity Organization;
  • The National Institute of Plantations Management conducts six-month full-time and 18-month part-time programmes for the benefit of management and supervisory staff from the State and private sector plantations. The participants are provided with residential facilities at the National Institute of Plantation Management and those completing the programmes successfully are awarded a Diploma in Plantation Management.
