4. Role of social impact assessment
Since the majority of the population in Papua New Guinea lives in the rural areas, the social impacts of mining and petroleum projects are very important considerations. In the new framework, SIA will be a part of EIA in appropriate cases. Some of the issues to be covered by SIAs will include the potential for cultural disturbances, the impact on cultural sites, the loss of access to subsistence resources, the pollution of water supplies, and the development of appropriate mechanisms to facilitate an ongoing relationship between the developer and the landowners for the resolution of future disputes.
