7. Fauna Protection and Control Act (and amendments)

The purpose of the Fauna Protection and Control Act (and amendments) is to protect either single species or groups of species from undue hunting pressure and to initiate conservation for those species. At present, 53 species of animals are protected under the Act. Those species are not given absolute protection as that would be impossible to enforce. Instead, the Act forbids the capture of those species by non-traditional methods and for non-traditional purposes. Bird of Paradise feathers, for example, are regarded as important cultural requirements and therefore can be harvested for such purposes by the local people. The Act also seeks to set up areas for species protection through the establishment of wildlife management areas. The hunting and selling of specific species in those areas are strictly controlled by the regulations gazetted at the time of the establishment of such areas.
