10. Intervarsity environmental debate

For the 1995 Intervarsity Environment Debate, a new format was introduced to improve the quality of the debate itself as well as to further improve the ability of the speakers in open spontaneous debate. The debate was divided into two sessions: the "open session" and the "normal session". The open session was similar to the berbalas pantun format where the debaters had to respond immediately to the points raised.

The new format was well accepted by the participants, and was adopted for future debates. Universiti Sains Malaysia was the 1995 winner of a trophy and a cash prize of M$ 3,000. The International Islamic University was placed second with a cash prize of M$ 2,000. The topic for the final debate was `"Environmental awareness among the public is just a trend". The winners received their prizes from the Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and the Environment at Universiti Utara Malaysia, in Sintok, Kedah State, in conjunction with the debate carnival, from 18-23 September 1995.
