F. Environmental education and awareness
The lack of environmental awareness among the general public, policy makers and business leaders is very important contributing factor in environmental degradation; the problem needs to be resolved, particularly in NWFP where the literacy level is low and many people live in marginal circumstances. Both formal and non-formal methods of education should be adopted, including the use of the local media, and the organization of seminars, special week-long events, workshops, walks and student competitions. Women's groups and other voluntary organizations can be very effective. At the same time, efforts should be made to improve the socio-economic conditions of the general population. Since poverty is the major cause of environmental degradation in the mountainous areas, the necessary steps should be taken to overcome that problem.
