III. CASE STUDY OF ENVIRONMENTAL REHABILITATION PROJECT IN MALAKAND DIVISION OF NORTH-WEST FRONTIER PROVINCE
J. Privatization of nurseries
ERP has set a target for 30 per cent of all Forest Department nurseries to eventually become semi-privatized. Small-scale nurseries are being established at schools and through village inhabitants. The nurseries, managed by either women or men, comprise 15,000 seedlings each, while each school nursery has between 3,000 and 5,000 seedlings. In addition, large-scale nurseries of 0.5 to 2 acres are being established with a mix of bare-root and potted plants. The project guarantees the purchase of a limited number of plants and the nursery manager sells the surplus production on the open market. The project also provides training in nursery management. Women have shown great interest in the nursery programme and several women's group nurseries are also being established.
