5. Noise pollution

In most rural areas and small towns of the province, noise pollution is insignificant. However, in the larger cities such as Peshawar, high noise levels are experienced, especially in the congested areas during peak traffic hours. The common sources of noise pollution are generally faulty silencers on cars, rickshaws and other vehicles, and over-enthusiastic use of high-pressure horns on heavy goods vehicles. According to EPA/NWFP, the noise level recorded at seven different localities in Peshawar was above the permissible level of 85 dBA. At one locality (the residential area on Arbab Road) it was as high as 113.5 dBA at dawn on 21 March 1995.
