1. National plan

The Malaysia New Economic Policy was introduced to provide the guidelines for the Kuala Lumpur Structure Plans. The policies and the related strategies incorporated plans to increase urban life quality (especially among the lower income group), employment growth, affordable housing, public infrastructures and facilities, and more efficient public transportation. Those strategies also ensure that an identity and infrastructure is in place from a physical environmental perspective and for the transportation network in the city.

The contributions by City Hall towards assisting, promoting and coordinating certain areas in line with the aspirations and objectives of the nation include:

  • Maintaining and enhancing the role of Kuala Lumpur as the centre of the federal government;
  • Assisting to promote and coordinate the implementation of the New Economic Policy;
  • Intensifying efforts to beautify Kuala Lumpur as a major metropolis and as the capital city of Malaysia;
  • Providing adequate housing amenities that are consistent with the income levels of the residents, and particularly low- and medium-cost housing;
  • Improving the urban economy and restructuring society socially and economically;
  • Developing and urbanizing rural areas;
  • Promoting and enhancing the role of Kuala Lumpur as a commercial and financial centre, and promoting the development of the city as a centre for local and international activities.
