II. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS OF DEVELOPMENT

[ II-A | II-B | II-C | II-D | II-E ]

E. Impacts resulting from construction and development activities

Soil erosion

Most of the land in Kuala Lumpur goes to new buildings development either for residential or commercial purposes. Removing vegetative cover has resulted in major soil erosion, loss of fertility, loss of water conservation and salinization. In Kuala Lumpur alone, most of the available land is subject to severe soil and water erosion. The effects of soil erosion in Kuala Lumpur can be seen in the increased sedimentation of the Klang River. The rapid increase in the population and the rising rate of development have already caused severe soil erosion and siltation problems through uncontrolled and unmonitored land development. The Klang River, which is considered to be the most polluted river in the area, had to undergo a major clean-up programme in 1990 because of siltation and solid waste pollution caused by city residents.
