4. Litter
Public awareness of the litter problem is relatively low in Fiji: for example, after public events the amount of litter is enormous. Public areas are seriously underserved with garbage cans. Litter is routinely thrown onto the foreshore and into rivers and mangroves. Yet the reduction in litter levels has become a major priority focus of the minister responsible for the environment. Regulations defining litter and controlling its disposal have been introduced by the government. (The measures are the subject of a special case study in chapter V of this report.) The Sustainable Development Bill gives considerable attention to control and management of litter.
