H. Case study of environmental management: controlling pollution from suburban galvanization factories through total cooperation

[ H-1 | H-2 | H-3 | H-4 ]

1. Outline

Shenyang first reduced the number of urban galvanization. As a result, many galvanization plants were transferred without control to suburban village enterprises, which led to the number of suburban galvanization operations rising fourfold within two years. None of the suburban factories factories had adequate measures or equipment for treating galvanization wastewater. The wastewater, which contained toxic chemicals such as cyanide, chromium and the other heavy metals, was directly discharged into farm fields and water bodies. The result was pollution of the soil and water bodies as well as serious health hazards. However, Shenyang City designed practical methods and regulations to control the development of suburban galvanization factories and protect the health of the population.
