3. Pollutant discharge standards applied in Shenyang

Shenyang applies national pollutant discharge standards and has no local standards. National discharge standards are general discharge standards established by the State for different industries or public facilities (such as automobiles and boilers). Many standards for pollutant discharges have been formulated and some are listed below:

  • Comprehensive standard on sewage discharges (GB8978)
  • Standard on hospital sewage discharges (GBJ48)
  • Standard on polluted water from oil exploration industrial discharges (GB3550-83)
  • Standard on pollutants from oil refining discharges (GB3551-83)
  • Standard on wastewater discharges from the petrochemical industry (GB4281-84)
  • Tentative standard on industrial "three wastes' discharges (GBJ4-73)
  • Standard of atmospheric pollutant discharges (GB13271-91)
  • Standard on industrial kiln dust discharges (GB9078-88)
  • Standard on pollutant discharges by pitch industries (GB4916-85)
  • Standard on atmospheric pollutant discharges by power plants using coal (GB 13223 -91)
  • Standard on noise from industrial enterprise sites (GB 12348-90)
  • Limiting values on construction site noise (GB12523-90)

It is essential to establish national environmental quality standards. In order to achieve that objective, levels of pollution discharges from all kinds of enterprises and institutions are controlled through State and local discharge standards for specific areas.
