2. Water pollution

Surface water pollution is serious in the area. There are more than 200 rivers in the middle region. Hunhe, Taizihe and Liaohe rivers are major rivers. Cities and industry are concentrated along the banks of the major rivers and their tributaries. Industrial and human sewage is directly discharged into those water bodies. As a result, river water pollution is serious. Water quality in the city sections of the rivers is over the national class five standard for surface water.
